Deepfakes and Democracy

Every day, we see -- and create! -- countless images and videos that have been edited or digitally altered. From simple Snapchat filters to short, lighthearted, or ironic TikTok videos, it’s clear that seeing and creating altered media is just part of online life today. But are your students aware of -- or have they thought deeply about -- the phenomenon of deepfake videos? As you watch, have your students consider questions like: Why are faked images and videos so popular? How might AI or deepfake technology subvert or threaten a democratic election? And perhaps more universally, How does the existence of this new technology change the way we see the world?

Chess

Rutherford County Schools has been collaborating with Rob Mitchell and school board member Caleb Tidwell on an initiative called “Promoting Pawns.” As part of this promotion, each school received a box of chess equipment and were invited to send their best player to a county-wide tournament on April 20th. Riverdale sent chess player Ethan Harrelson to compete in the tournament. He came back with the first place trophy. Ethan has been playing for many years and is an active member of Riverdale’s chess club. He has competed in many of the tournaments in the county, including the yearly tournament at Central Magnet and tournaments with the Murfreesboro Chess Club. We are proud of Ethan and his accomplishments!

The Riverdale JROTC hosted a Cadet Camp for rising freshman on Saturday May 11th, 2024. This camp provided these students with introductory training to help assist them in the transition to high school. They participated in a physical assessment and group adventure activities and were treated to a pizza luncheon. The overall goal was to get them excited to come to Riverdale and by the smiles on their faces when they left, the mission was a success. We had a total of 30 rising freshman and over 40 parents that stayed to watch. It was a good day to be a Warrior.
